Genuine Fixed Matches Today 100% Sevilla wins Europa League again
Gonzalo Montiel converted the clinching penalty in the Europa League final five months after scoring the winning penalty in the World Cup final to give Sevilla their eighth victory in the competition at the cost of Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Wednesday.
The Argentina international sent Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio the wrong way with his retaken penalty, securing a 4-1 shootout win for Sevilla after the match finished 1-1 after extra time in Budapest, where Mourinho was looking to keep his record of never losing a European final.
“I’ve won five finals and lost this one, but I’m coming back home proud again,” Mourinho said to Sky Sports Italy. “The boys gave their all.”
Europe Matches Guaranteed Win
Roma’s Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez missed penalty kicks against Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Montiel missed his initial shot but was given another when Patrcio was found to have stepped off his line.
Sevilla has yet to lose a final of the Europa League or its predecessor, the UEFA Cup – the team also won the competition in 2006, ’07, ’14, ’15, ’16, and ’20 – and has booked a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Sevilla had appeared to be on the verge of relegation in the Spanish league and was eliminated from the Champions League at one point. But it wasn’t done yet. When a new coach, José Luis Mendilibar, arrived, things began to improve.
Before the final, Mourinho actually had more European title wins than Mendilibar had total games managed in those same competitions.
The 62-year-old Mendilibar’s career has been peaking since joining then-struggling Sevilla just two months ago. As Sevilla players celebrated on the field, Mourinho kept his calm and congratulated Sevilla on the victory.
“We lost a game but not dignity. I’ve never gone home prouder than today, even when I won,” Mourinho said. “Great match, great final. Intense, vibrant.”
After receiving his runners-up medal, Mourinho took it off and gave it to a young fan.
Successful Paid Tips 1×2
Thanks to Paulo Dybala, Roma took the lead in the 35th minute at Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Mancini sent a through pass for Dybala, who scored with a low left-footed effort past Bounou.
Argentina’s forward recovered from an ankle injury in time to play in the final. Dybala’s sixth goal in the Europa League and 17th of the season.
Ivan Rakiti came close to equalizing in first-half stoppage time with a low effort from around 20 meters that rebounded against the post.
At the start of the second half, Mendilibar brought on midfielder Suso and forward Erik Lamela, both former Roma players, as replacements to help his squad.
Sevilla equalized 10 minutes into the second half on Mancini’s own goal while under pressure from Youssef En-Nesyri. Captain Jess Navas set up the plan with a right-wing cross.
Navas, a 37-year-old veteran, was part of Sevilla’s first Europa League title-winning squad in 2006.
Following Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free-kick seven minutes from time, substitute Andrea Belotti failed to beat Bounou in a one-on-one. Patrcio saved Suso’s long-range attempt in the final seconds.
Sevilla had the upper hand in extra time but failed to produce a clear goal opportunity.
Conclusion
In the end, Roma defender Chris Smalling headed the ball onto the crossbar.
Mendilibar, who took over for former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli in March, became Sevilla’s third boss this season, with the team just two points clear of the La Liga relegation zone.
Sevilla, led by Mendilibar, has lost only two of its 11 league games and is presently one point behind seventh place heading into the final round this weekend.
